Choosing the right rug: A guide

Rugs are practical additions to almost all rooms in your home. In this guide, we will help you choose the best rug for the bedroom and children’s room, dining room, living room, kitchen, kitchen and hall.

Stepping out of the warm bed can be a little easier when a comfy rug welcomes your feet. Place rectangular rugs on each side and at the end of the bed or choose a rug that covers the floor under the bed – large enough to place your feet on. A woollen rug or a rug with a mid-to-high pile can add extra warmth and comfort, especially on cold mornings.

Tip: Keep your rugs in place with a non-slip underlay, so you prevent the risk of slipping, tripping or falling.

Dining room rug

In the dining room, a large rug under the dining table can be both practical and comfy. Your floors will benefit from it, as the rug will protect them from wear and tear from dining chairs being pulled out and in.

Make sure that the rug is large enough for you to pull out the dining chairs without being bothered by the borders and go for a low to mid-pile rug that is easier to clean and doesn’t hide crumbs.

A rug under the dining table can also help tie the room together and have a positive effect on the acoustics. And last, but not least, it is comfier to place your feet on a rug, than on the bare floor.

If you have a round dining table rather than a square or rectangular one, choosing a round rug is an elegant solution that shows purposeful consideration.

You might find it practical to put a rug in a dark colour or a patterned rug under the dining table. Both are less delicate than a monochromatic light one, as stains will not show as much.

Living room rug

In the living room as well as in the dining room, a rug can contribute to the visual expression, the acoustics, and the overall feeling of comfort. Place the rug under the coffee table and choose a comfy and warm rug with a mid-rise if you or your children snack popcorn and other treats on movie nights, or a high-rise, if you prefer an extra soft and comfy feeling against your feet.

Kitchen rugs

When you spend a long time preparing meals in the kitchen, it can be less tough on the feet and more pleasant to stand on a rug. Choose a kitchen rug that is easy to clean such as a low-pile or flat-weave rug, or one that is washable, so you don’t have to worry too much about stains. Don’t forget to put a non-slip underlay under the rug to prevent accidents.

Rugs for the hall

The floor in the hall is probably extra exposed to dirt and moisture from outdoor shoes. A rug for the hall can both help protect the floor and keep a tidy look. Find a small rug that you can hang outside so dirt and dust can easily be cleaned off.

Jute rugs are especially well suited for an entrance area. They are durable, easy to maintain, and their neutral colour means they are super versatile and can blend well with just about any style.

Choosing the right rug isn’t just about aesthetics but also about comfort and practicality. So, whether you're sinking your toes into a plush bedroom rug, enjoying the warmth of a living room rug on movie nights, or appreciating the durability of a kitchen or hallway rug, let your choice reflect both your style and the way you live.
