How to decorate your balcony or small patio

The truth of summer is that everyone has their own way of enjoying it. Whether you have a spacious garden or a small patio, a purposeful interior can help take your outdoor space from bland to beautiful.

By using our 5 tips to decorate your small patio or balcony you can create a cosy and inviting space that is perfect for enjoying your summer moments.

1. Choose multifunctional furniture

When the space is limited it is a good idea to think about how furniture can be used in different ways. It can be a stool that can function both as a seating and a small table.

Another good piece of multifunctional furniture is a garden bench. Use it as 2-3 seating places, use it as a combined table and seating place or use it as a comfortable seating place where to can get your feet up.

One big advantage of small outdoor spaces is that it is super easy to create a cosy atmosphere. Create that cosiness on the bench with plants and lanterns.

Use the bench functional as a table to place your breakfast.

2. Consider how you use your balcony

Think about how you use your outdoor space most of the time. You need to prioritize. If you had a spacious patio there would be plenty of room for a lounge set, a garden set, and maybe a cool fire pit.

However, since that is not your reality then consider how you use the space. Do you like inviting people over for a dinner outside? Are you more into enjoying your own company with a book and a glass of wine?

Or do you want to grow your own herbs and vegetables? All three scenarios are realistic on most balconies – but not at the same time.

By choosing the combination of a bench and a lounge chair you both have seating space for 3-4 people while at the same time a very comfortable solution when you are alone.

Want that cosy summer vibe on your balcony? Add lots of plants that will provide shadow and atmosphere and fill the chair and bench with cushions and throws – super comfortable and super cosy.

3. Add a functional storage solution

A bar trolley is a flexible solution for the balcony. It is easy to move around and can be used as a table for snacks or you can create a small garden on several levels with plants of different sizes.

A bar trolly can also be used as storage for what you use daily on the balcony such as tableware, sunscreen, books, watering can and so on.

Another good solution for storage is a bench with built-in storage space.

4. Create a green oasis

Pack your balcony with planters filled with lush plants to create the feel of that backyard you've always wanted. Add some herbs to make your balcony smell as good as it looks.

Create a cosy and trendy atmosphere with planters in different shapes and colours. Fill them with green plants and colourful flowers.

Baskets are not only smart for storing cushions and rugs but can also serve as planters with great structure and beautiful colours. Remember to put a saucer in.

5. Turn up the cosiness with textiles and baskets

Want to make your balcony or small patio feel as homely as the rest of your place? Take a cue from your indoor space and get inspiration on how to add that personal touch to your balcony.
