How to choose the right mattress size

When you buy a new mattress, you can choose between several standard sizes. At JYSK, we can help you find the mattress size that will work best for your sleeping needs.

Which mattress size is right for you? To choose the right mattress size, you need to consider:

  • Whether you sleep alone or with a partner
  • Whether you are a restless sleeper or not
  • How much space you have
  • Your height

In this article, we will take a closer look at what you should be aware of when determining which mattress size you should choose.

Standard mattress sizes

The right mattress choice often depends on specific individual needs but there are a number of standard mattress sizes that you can use as a guide to select the best option for you.

If the standard sizes don't fit you, you also have the option of having a made-to-measure mattress.

Best for the guest room where there isn’t enough space for a wide bed. A guest bed is typically 90x190 cm, so a single mattress is a perfect fit for a smaller room. A foam mattress would typically be the preferred option.

Queen size
120x190 cm

Double mattress size
135x190 cm / 140x200 cm

A good solution for children, teens, and singles. These also work well in dorms or holiday homes, where there isn’t quite enough space for a wider bed.

A good solution for couples who live in a smaller flat or an individual who prefers a large bed if there is space enough for it.

The best choice for couples who live in a house or larger flat. A super king size mattress is also ideal if one partner moves around a lot while they sleep. With a 180x200 cm mattress, there’s also plenty of room for any younger children who may sneak into the bed during the night.

How long should your mattress be if you're tall?

Your height is an important factor in choosing your mattress. As a rule of thumb, your mattress should be at least 20 cm longer than your height. You should be able to stretch your arms over your head without feeling like the mattress is too short.

Choosing the right mattress length is about much more than just ensuring that your feet don’t hang over the edge. If you sleep in a bed that is too short, the comfort zones will shift and you won’t get the support your body needs, regardless of whether you sleep on your back or your side.

How big should a couple's mattress be?

The bigger the bed, the less you risk being disturbed by your partner or vice versa. If a couple lies close together on a small mattress, neither will get the proper support that they need, leading to reduced quality of sleep.

When a couple sleeps close together, it creates much more pressure on the springs or foam, and this will have a negative effect on the mattress’s ability to adapt to different sleeping positions. Mattress adaptability is based on one person lying on part of the mattress, not two.

Couples should sleep on a mattress that is nothing less than double mattress size. A 180 cm wide mattress is ideal if there’s space for it in the bedroom. For couples who disturb the other’s sleep, consider a mattress with latex and memory foam to help absorb movement.

Mattress size for restless sleepers?

If you’re a restless sleeper, you’ll want a mattress that gives you more room to spread out. As a guiding principle, one person can choose a single mattress size, but if you move around a lot at night, or if you’re afraid you might fall out of bed, it’s a good idea to choose a mattress that's a bit wider.
