How to decorate your balcony or small patio

The truth of summer is that everyone has their own way of enjoying it. Whether you have a spacious garden or a small patio, a purposeful interior can help take your outdoor space from bland to beautiful. By using our 5 tips to decorate your small patio or balcony, you can create a cosy and inviting space that is perfect for enjoying your summer moments.

1. Choose multifunctional furniture

When the space is limited, it's a good idea to think about how furniture can be used in different ways. It can be a stool that can function both as a seating and a small table, or a garden bench that has seating capacity for up to two to three persons. You can also choose furniture that can be folded when not in use. One big advantage of small outdoor spaces is that it is super easy to create a cosy atmosphere. Create that cosiness on the bench with plants and lanterns.

2. Consider how you use your balcony

Think about how you use your outdoor space most of the time. You need to prioritise. If you had a spacious patio, there would be plenty of room for a lounge set, a garden set, and maybe a cool fire pit.

However, since that is not your reality, consider how you use the space. Do you like inviting people over for dinner outside? Are you more into enjoying your own company with a book and a glass of wine? Or do you want to grow your own herbs and vegetables? All three scenarios are realistic on most balconies – but not at the same time.

Want that cosy summer vibe on your balcony? Add lots of plants that will provide shade and atmosphere, and fill the chair and bench with cushions and throws – super comfortable and super cosy.

3. Add a functional storage solution

With a small balcony or patio, it's a good idea with functional storage solutions. A cushion box, for example, is a flexible solution for a small outdoor area. It's easy to move around and can be used as a table for snacks, or you can create a small garden on several levels with plants of different sizes. Get tips on how to choose the right cushion box.

4. Create a green oasis

Pack your balcony with planters filled with lush plants to create the feel of that backyard you've always wanted. Add some herbs to make your balcony smell as good as it looks. Plants and planters add a cosy and modern touch to your outdoor space.

5. Turn up the cosiness with textiles and baskets

Want to make your balcony or small patio feel as homely as the rest of your place? Take a cue from your indoor space and get inspiration on how to add that personal touch to your balcony. Look at all the different textiles you have in your living room e.g. throws, cushions, rugs, and soft comfortable furniture and re-create a similar style in your outdoor space and you’ll struggle to leave.
