Scatter cushions to add a finishing touch

Decorative cushions are ideal for adding detail without making major changes to your home. A few carefully chosen scatter cushions can make a sofa feel more comfortable, give an armchair extra support or add a hotel-inspired finish to a bed.

For a calm Scandinavian-inspired look, choose soft neutrals, textured fabrics and simple patterns. For a more expressive style, combine colourful cushions with tactile materials such as velvet, faux fur or woven finishes. Patterned scatter cushions can introduce movement and visual interest, while plain decorative cushions help balance the overall look.

In living rooms, scatter cushions work well in groups of two or three, depending on the size of your sofa. In bedrooms, layer larger cushions at the back with smaller accents in front for a softer and more styled finish.

When choosing scatter cushions, start with the colours already in your room. If your sofa, curtains or rug are neutral, cushions are an easy way to add a seasonal accent. If the room already has strong colours, choose cushions in complementary tones to keep the space balanced.

Size and shape also matter. Larger scatter cushions create a relaxed, lounge-like feel, while smaller styles are useful for layering. Square cushions are versatile and easy to style, while rectangular, bolster cushions or round designs can break up straight lines and add variety.

Texture can make just as much impact as colour. Soft-touch cushions bring a cosy feel to living rooms and bedrooms, while smoother finishes can make the space feel more elegant. To keep the look cohesive, repeat one or two colours across cushions, throws or rugs rather than mixing too many shades at once.

Although “throw pillow” is more commonly used in American English, many people use the term when looking for decorative cushions for sofas and beds. Throw cushions work in the same way, adding comfort and style wherever you want a softer finish.

A single throw pillow can refresh an occasional chair, while several throw cushions can transform a plain sofa into a more welcoming focal point. For a layered living room, combine scatter cushions with throws and blankets and a soft rug. In the bedroom, style cushions with duvet cover sets to create a more complete and inviting look.

Scatter cushions that are used all throughout the year round should be both decorative and practical. Lighter colours and natural textures can brighten spring and summer interiors, while deeper shades, velvet finishes and layered textiles add warmth during autumn and winter.

JYSK’s range of decorative cushions makes it easy to update your home affordably, without replacing larger furniture.
