What size top mattress will fit your bed?

When it comes to top mattresses, its size should match the dimensions of your underlying mattress. This is first and foremost a matter of achieving maximum comfort. A bed will also look much more elegant if the top mattress and underlying mattress are the same size.

Achieving perfect comfort and an aesthetically pleasing balance between a top mattress and an underlying mattress is not just a matter of identical sizes, however. The quality of each mattress should also complement the other in order to ensure optimal sleeping comfort. In this article, you will find help for how to choose a top mattress that will perfectly complement your current mattress.

Top mattress sizes

If you have a single bed, a double bed, or a super king size bed, you will most likely need a top mattress in one of the standard sizes. There can be exceptions, however. If you want to be completely sure that you don't end up buying a top mattress that is too small or too big, you should check the precise measurements of your mattress.

You can either get the dimensions from the store where you bought the mattress, or you can simply measure the mattress yourself. If the standard sizes don't fit you, you also have the option of having a specially made mattress.

Top mattress sizes and dimensions

In the table below, you can see what size top mattress goes with your underlying mattress. The first number in the left column is the width of the top mattress and the second number is the length of the top mattress. In other words, a 90x190 cm top mattress is 90 cm wide and 190 cm long.

The bed expert's tip: Make sure your top mattress matches your mattress

Size is obviously the most important factor in making sure that a specific top mattress fits your underlying mattress, but the properties of the two mattresses should also complement each other if you want to achieve the best possible comfort.

Your underlying mattress has special qualities depending on its type. This could be anything from special comfort zones to specific types of springs that you chose to match your needs and preferences.

In most cases, a top mattress should complement the qualities of your underlying mattress. This serves to enhance the feeling and comfort that led you to select your mattress in the first place. The result will be a bed that is even more comfortable than it was before.

Enhance the properties of your mattress

The top mattress should work with the comfort zones in the underlying mattress. If, for example, you have a five-zone spring core in your mattress, you'll have a firm zone at your hips and a soft zone at your shoulders. If you add a zoned top mattress to it, the zones should be in the same location in both mattresses.

Neutralise the properties of your mattress

In some cases, you might choose to buy a top mattress that neutralises, rather than complements, the properties of your existing mattress. This could for example be the case if your body has changed and you now want a softer feel, but you don't want to have to go out and buy a new bed. If, for example, you put a top mattress with a firm zone on top of a spring mattress with a soft zone, the bed will feel firmer.

"It's a way of using the top mattress to work against or reduce the properties of the underlying mattress."
