Different garden chairs have different properties: Some you can stack, others you can fold. Some have an armrest, others have a high backrest. So what should you choose? In this blog post, we guide you to the decision that is right for you.
Small balcony or large patio?
A small balcony or patio requires smaller furniture. Most garden chairs have a width that ranges from around 40 to 70 cm so if you have a small balcony or patio you should go for narrow garden chairs. You could also use a garden bench for seating. There is a rule of thumb saying that you should allow a gap of about 15 cm between your garden chairs for everyone to sit comfortably but this does not apply to a garden bench.
If, on the other hand, you have a large balcony or patio, you are free to choose wider garden chairs with armrests and a lot of presence.
High backrest or short backrest?
Do you enjoy long dinners in each other’s company? In that case, it is extra important that the garden chairs are comfortable. A high backrest provides full back support and can protect you and your guests from a cold draught.
Also take into consideration what kind of material you prefer. Read more about the pros and cons of different materials in our guide How to choose garden furniture.
Garden chairs with a shorter backrest have a more elegant expression and can be easier to move around.
Garden stacking chairs or garden recliner chairs?
You also have to ask yourself where do you want to keep the chairs when they are not in use. Do you have a shed where you can keep them sheltered from the rain? In that case, garden stacking chairs are ideal, because they don’t take up too much room when stacked.
Garden recliner chairs are also space saving: They are two-in-one because you can use them in their upright position as a dining chair or relax in them when they are in their reclined position. Leaned up against the garden table or a wall they take up only a little space and they are easy to fold out once you are ready to use them again.
Protect your garden furniture with a cover
If you leave your garden chairs out in the open, it is a good idea to protect them with a cover. This will increase their durability and decreases the amount of time that you have to spend cleaning and maintaining them. And there is no need to spend time folding your garden folding chairs.
Don’t forget the garden cushions
Last but not least, you should make sure that you and your guest are warm and comfy when using your new garden chairs. Garden cushions that fit on chairs provide a warm and soft seating, and if you accessorize them with some throws then you are well prepared for long and enjoyable summer evenings.
