Benefits of a mattress pad

A mattress pad, a mattress cover or a mattress protector – a dear child has many names. Whatever you call it, it can be of a great assistance to you and help you save both time and money in the long run.

A mattress pad is the final layer between the mattress (or the mattress topper) and the sheet. It is a soft sheet-like layer that serves a hygienic purpose and adds an extra bit of comfort to your mattress. You can never go wrong with covering your mattress with a mattress pad.

What is a mattress pad?

A mattress pad is a thin and flexible mattress that protects your mattress. It is usually fitted to the mattress with elastic corner straps and can easily be removed for washing.

Do not mistake it for a mattress topper, which is a thick (around 5 cm) mattress that goes on top of your regular mattress. The mattress pad has the power to improve your sleep quality, prolong the lifetime of your mattress and save you money eventually.

Are mattress pads necessary?

Mattress pads are useful in many ways. They protect the mattress from the sweat and moist that we all release during the night. Without a mattress pad, your mattress or mattress topper will absorb all of this and get worn out ahead of time. In addition to the protecting and hygienic benefits, a mattress pad keeps your sheets from sliding out of place and provides an extra thin layer of softness for your nightly comfort.

Can mattress pad be washed?

Mattress pads are both washable and easy to remove from the bed and put in the washing machine. Washing a mattress or a mattress topper can be quite a workload. Even if some mattresses have a cover that you can zip off, it is not necessarily washable. You might have to resign to just hanging it out in the fresh air. On the other hand, you can wash most mattress pads at 60 degrees and this way eliminate dust mites and prevent them from making themselves at home in your bed.

Some mattress pads even have an antibacterial or anti-allergy treatment, which prevents bacteria, or dust mites from multiplying.

Which mattress pad is the right one?

Which mattress pad you should choose depends on both the size of your mattress and your individual preferences. Mattress pads can be made from polyester, cotton or a mix. Take some time to consider what material you prefer, and if you need extra protection against bacteria and dust mites. If you're still not sure then you can always check with our skilled staff at one of the JYSK stores.
