Festive outdoor Christmas lights for a welcoming winter glow

A few well-placed lights can make your front garden feel welcoming long before guests reach the door. Outdoor Christmas tree lights work beautifully on natural trees, shrubs and potted evergreens, while shorter strings can add sparkle to balcony railings or entranceways.

For a fuller display, cluster Christmas lights place LEDs close together for a concentrated glow. JYSK's FEDTSTEN and KORNSTEN designs are well suited to creating a striking feature along a fence or around a tree. Warm white cluster lights are particularly versatile, complementing greenery and traditional Christmas decorations, while multicoloured lights offer a more playful, colourful festive look.

For something simpler, outdoor string lights and outdoor fairy lights create an even line of light around branches, door frames or garden features. When choosing the right length, measure the space first and allow enough cable to reach your power source.

Outdoor Christmas lights need to be suitable for the location in which they're used, particularly during wet and windy winter weather. JYSK's outdoor LED collection includes plug-in string and cluster lights as well as battery-operated options for areas without a convenient socket.

Compact BAUGE and ANTIGORIT strings offer flexible placement, while plug-in SNOTRA lights are useful for larger displays. Selected designs also feature timers, so you can enjoy a festive glow without switching everything on and off manually.

If you're searching for waterproof outdoor Christmas lights, check the individual product's suitability, instructions and weather-protection rating rather than assuming every light or electrical connection can be exposed to rain. Secure cables neatly and use outdoor-rated connections where required. LED lighting is an energy-efficient choice for creating a welcoming display throughout December.

A decorative light tree makes an eye-catching addition to a porch, patio or sheltered entrance. JYSK's outdoor collection includes compact styles such as HEIMDAL and taller designs such as HLIN, offering different heights for small and larger spaces.

An LED light-up tree provides a ready-made illuminated feature without needing to wrap individual branches. For a more delicate look, decorative twig lights and the BUKK illuminated branch can add height and texture to a festive arrangement. Place a tree or branch near your entrance to create a warm welcome.

An illuminated Christmas wreath is another easy way to introduce seasonal character. Pair one with greenery or other Christmas decorations and check its recommended location before hanging it outdoors.

Icicle Christmas lights for rooflines and windows

Icicle Christmas lights create a soft cascading effect along roof edges, window frames and balconies. JYSK's SNOTRA icicle designs provide a more decorative alternative to a straight string of bulbs. Plan their position carefully and use suitable secure fixings rather than allowing the lights to hang loosely in windy conditions.

Christmas curtain lights and net lights inspiration

For a broader wash of light across a hedge or fence, net Christmas lights and Christmas curtain lights are popular decorating styles. If you prefer this look, outdoor string lights can also be arranged in repeated vertical lines or spaced evenly across greenery. This lets you achieve a similar effect using the current assortment without relying on a dedicated net or curtain design.

Bring indoor and outdoor Christmas lights together

Repeat the same warm white tone inside and outside for a cohesive festive look. Pair outdoor lights with indoor Christmas lights in windows, then add Christmas baubles or simple ornaments to connect the different spaces. Explore our wider range of Christmas decorations for a few complementary finishing touches.

After the celebrations, let your lights dry fully, disconnect power and loosely wind the cables to help prevent tangling. Keep them in labelled storage boxes somewhere dry, alongside any fixing accessories, so your display is easier to set up next year.
