Specialist pillows: Support, comfort and restful nights

A good night's sleep is important for both your body and your sense of well-being.

If you sometimes wake up with a stiff or sore neck or don’t feel well-rested, it may be a sign that your pillow doesn’t provide you with the support that you need.

Specialist pillows are designed to give you a stable support throughout the night by keeping your neck and spine aligned in a straight line. They are a group of ergonomic pillows, contour pillows and other pillows with special features, which can help relieve pressure on your muscles and joints, reduce muscle tension, and decrease the risk of discomfort.

Pillows that shape themselves to you

There is a specialist pillow for every need and every sleep position. Whether you are a side sleeper, a back sleeper or even a stomach sleeper, you can find a specialist pillow that provides you with the support and relief around your shoulders and neck that you need. In this blog post, we will dig into the unique features of specialist pillows.

Materials and support

A specialist pillow is filled with a type of special filling – typically AIR memory foam, memory foam or latex.

  • Specialist pillows with memory foam provide optimal support and relief for your muscles and joints. You will get excellent support for sleeping in an ergonomically correct position with a memory foam pillow.
  • AIR memory foam is foam with air-filled cells that make the foam softer. AIR memory foam pillows are not affected by the room temperature and therefore maintain good support for your head, neck and back even in a cool bedroom. Shredded AIR memory foam spreads your weight evenly, which helps reduce pressure on your muscles and joints.
  • A specialist pillow with latex is exceptionally breathable and good at releasing excess heat. This makes it ideal for people who tend to feel warm at night.

Side sleeper, back sleeper or stomach sleeper?

Do you sleep on your side, on your back or on your stomach? There is a specialist pillow for you no matter which sleeping position you prefer.

If you sleep on your back, a pillow of medium height is probably right for you. If you sleep on your side, go for a high pillow that can fill out the space between your neck and the mattress.

Side or back sleepers might also consider a contour pillow with a curved shape. A contour pillow provides extra support for your neck, head, and shoulders. This helps keep your spine and neck aligned, so you can lie in a comfortable and natural sleeping position throughout the night.

Stomach sleepers can benefit from pillows that can be adjusted precisely to their needs. This will help stomach sleepers find a more comfortable position, potentially on their back or side. Adjustable pillows can be opened so you can remove filling until the pillow matches your preferences. The filling can either be shredded foam or foam layers. Make sure to keep the filling in case you want to add some again at a later point.

Temperature regulation

If you tend to feel warm at night, look for a specialist pillow that offers temperature regulation. You can find specialist pillows where the pillow itself has a cooling surface, or pillows whose cover regulates temperature and moisture by absorbing, storing and releasing heat. This helps maintain an ideal temperature and humidity balance.

Hygiene is important in your bedroom, and by choosing an AIR memory foam pillow, you get a pillow that stays fresh and dry, even over extended periods of use. The small holes in the foam core increase air flow through the pillow and transport moisture away. You should also make sure to choose a pillow with a cover that is machine washable.

Getting used to a foam pillow

Foam pillows are good at providing solid support, thanks to their compact shape that remains stable throughout the night. To some people, the pillow might feel quite firm. If you are used to a fibre or down pillow, it may take a little time to get used to the feel of foam.

When you first get a new pillow with memory foam or AIR memory foam, you might notice a slight manufacturing smell. This is completely harmless and will fade away over time. Airing or vacuuming the pillow can help speed up the process.
